Destinations in the Dominican Republic
Punta Cana
The Dominican Republic's eastern point is characterized by an almost unbroken succession of sugar-cane fields and orange groves. Most travellers come to this region for its beaches, among the most beautiful in the country, if not the whole Caribbean. For over a decade now, the once nearly uninhabited northeastern shore of the Dominican Republic, known as the Coconut Coast, has become a major holiday destination. Most developers have followed the same general plan, building grand luxury hotels on large properties, at the edge of breathtaking and completely isolated beaches.

Santo Domingo
The first city founded in the Americas, the capital Santo Domingo was built in 1502 by Nicolás de Ovando, the colonial governor. Today, with over 3,000,000 inhabitants, Santo Domingo is the largest and most populated city in the Dominican Republic. It is also the country's financial, industrial and commercial centre. Its petrochemical, metallurgical, textile and plastic industries are thriving. Despite the frantic pace of life here, Santo Domingo is a pleasant city, especially in the colonial zone, where colonial-era buildings are concentrated.
Puerto Plata and the Atlantic Coast
Travelling from Puerto Plata to the Samaná Peninsula, a formidable 150 km long (93 mi) seafront, takes you through one of the best-known regions of the Dominican Republic. More than anywhere else in the country, the development of tourism has been particularly intense here over the last 20 years, and many of the region's towns and villages have become major resort areas. Following Puerto Plata, Sosúa and Cabarete, development of the superb beaches has now moved further east, to the regions of Río San Juan and Playa Grande.

On a tiny island joined to Caleta by a footbridge is Magico Mundo Marino, the town's largest aquarium. It features some of the world's more outlandish sea creatures, like giant eels, sharks and piranhas.
Glass-bottom boats take passengers from Caleta to Roqueta Island, just 10 minutes away. Here you will find a less crowded but still well-attended beach. You can climb the lighthouse or visit the birds and animals at Aca Zoo (closed Tuesdays). This small zoo is home to a couple of lions and tigers, as well as monkeys and a giraffe.

The cheapest way to get to the Dominican Republic by air is as part of an all-inclusive package tour; they're so cheap, in fact, that many people book time at an all-inclusive ticket and leave their hotel rooms empty part of the time while they explore the rest of the island. Whether you get your ticket a la carte or through a resort, there are direct flights from Europe, the Americas and Australia. Fares vary with the season, date of purchase and whims of the airline; shop around. Several cruise ship lines also have ports of call in the DR. There is a departure tax whether you're leaving by land or by sea.
There are two main crossing points between Haiti and the Dominican Republic. One is at Jimaní/Malpasse, on the southern route that links Port-au-Prince and Santo Domingo. The other, at Dajabón/Ouanaminthe, links Cap-Haïtian and Santiago. There is a third crossing near the centre of the island, at Elías Piña/Belladere, but foreigners generally give this one a miss.
Borders are generally open 08:00-16:00, but don't cut it too close or you may be asked to come back the following day. Be sure to have all the necessary documents together to expedite the process.
